# Missing viewport meta tag

Without a viewport meta tag, phones render the page as a shrunken desktop layout that people have to pinch and zoom to read.

## What it means
The viewport meta tag tells mobile browsers how wide the page should be. The standard value is <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">.

Without it, mobile browsers assume a desktop-width page, usually around 980 pixels wide, and scale it down to fit the screen.

## Why it matters
Google uses the mobile version of a page for indexing and ranking (mobile-first indexing), so a page that doesn’t work on phones is judged on its weakest version.

For people, text becomes tiny and links too small to tap. Settings such as maximum-scale=1 or user-scalable=no also stop people from zooming, which fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.4.

## How to find it yourself
- View the page source and search for name="viewport".
- Open the page on a phone, or in the browser’s device mode, and see whether the text is readable without zooming.

## How to fix it on any website
1. Add <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> to the <head> of every page.
2. Don’t add maximum-scale or user-scalable=no; people must be able to zoom.

## On Shopify
1. Every current Shopify theme includes the tag; if it’s missing, check theme.liquid for a removed or edited line.

## On WordPress and WooCommerce
1. Modern themes include it. If yours doesn’t, add it to the theme’s header template, or switch to a responsive theme.

## How to check the fix
- Run the meta tag checker and confirm the viewport value.

## How FixReports finds it
The SEO checker reads the viewport meta tag on every page it tests.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the viewport tag enough to make a site mobile-friendly?

No. It lets a responsive layout work; the page also needs CSS that adapts to small screens.
