What it means
Duplicate titles are two or more pages, other than intentional duplicates such as filtered views, whose <title> text is exactly the same.
They are usually caused by templates: a theme that prints only the store name, a blog that uses the site name for every post, or an SEO setting with a fixed pattern.
Why it matters
Google’s guidance is to avoid repeated or boilerplate titles and to make each one descriptive and specific to its page. When titles repeat, Google is more likely to rewrite them in search results.
People with several tabs open, and screen reader users moving between pages, rely on titles to tell pages apart.
How to find it yourself
- Search Console doesn’t report duplicate titles directly; a crawler or the SEO checker compares titles across pages.
- Search Google for site:yoursite.com and scan the results for repeated headlines.
How to fix it
On any website
- Build titles from each page’s own content: the product, article or service name first, then the brand.
- Set the pattern in your theme or SEO settings so it uses page-specific fields instead of fixed text.
On Shopify
- Fill in “Search engine listing” titles for the products and collections that matter most; by default Shopify uses each item’s own name, so duplicates usually come from a theme or app override.
On WordPress and WooCommerce
- In your SEO plugin, check the title templates for each content type and make sure they include the post or page title.
How to check the fix
- Run the SEO checker again; it compares the titles of the key pages it tests.
How FixReports finds it
The SEO checker compares the titles of all the key pages it tests (the cart excepted) and lists any title used on more than one of them.
