Site speed

Heavy pages and too many requests

The more a page downloads, the longer it takes on a phone. Pages of several megabytes, or with hundreds of separate files, are slow on all but the best connections.

What it means

We flag pages that download more than 3 MB (more than 5 MB is high severity) and pages that make more than 150 requests.

Why it matters

Page weight costs time and, for visitors on metered plans, money. The usual sources are images, videos, fonts, and scripts from apps, plugins and tags.

How to find it yourself

  • The Network panel in DevTools shows the total transferred size and the number of requests at the bottom.
  • Sort by size to see the largest files.

How to fix it

On any website

  1. Start with the largest files: compress and resize images, and don’t autoplay large videos.
  2. Remove fonts, font weights and icon sets you don’t use.
  3. Remove unused scripts and combine or drop small ones that each add a request.

On Shopify

  1. Remove apps you don’t use and their leftover code; limit the number of sections with sliders and videos on the home page.

On WordPress and WooCommerce

  1. Deactivate plugins that load assets on every page, and use a caching or optimization plugin to combine and minify files.

How to check the fix

  • Run the speed test again and compare the page weight and request count.

How FixReports finds it

The speed test records every download during the page load, by type, and reports the total size and number of requests.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good page weight?

There is no official limit. Lighter is faster; our reports flag pages over 3 MB because they are slow on typical mobile connections.
