Accessibility best practice

All page content should be contained by landmarks

Some content isn't inside a page landmark (header, nav, main or footer).

What this rule checks

Ensure all page content is contained by landmarks.

Why it matters

Landmarks let screen reader users jump around the page. This is a best practice supporting WCAG 1.3.1 and 2.4.1.

This rule is a recommended practice: failing it isn't a WCAG failure on its own, so our reports list it separately from WCAG failures.

How to fix it

  1. Wrap stray content (announcement bars, pop-ups, chat widgets) in the appropriate landmark or place it inside <main>.

How to check the fix

  • Re-scan the affected pages.

How FixReports finds it

Our scan runs the axe-core rule region in a real Chrome browser on every page it tests, and reports each failing element with its page, its markup and, where it applies, a screenshot.

An automated test confirms that this specific problem is present. It can't tell whether the rest of the page is accessible: some barriers only show up when a person checks the page.

What kind of website is this?

Your answer picks the right checks, like the shopping journey for online stores. We still check the site's own evidence and show both.
