Title tags that get cut off

Long titles aren’t an error, but search results shorten them to fit the screen, so the end of a long title may never be seen.

What it means

Google sets no character limit for titles. Title links are truncated to fit the width of the device, and the cut usually falls somewhere after 50 to 60 characters, depending on the letters used.

We flag titles over 60 characters as likely to be shortened.

Why it matters

If the words that describe the page come last, a shortened title may show only the brand or a generic phrase. Google also says it may rewrite titles that are very long.

How to find it yourself

  • The meta tag checker shows each title with its character count.
  • Search for the page in Google and see where the title link is cut.

How to fix it

  1. Put the most specific words first: what the page is about, then the brand.
  2. Remove filler such as “Welcome to” and repeated keywords; Google warns against keyword stuffing in titles.
  3. Shorten the brand part (for example “| Acme” instead of “| Acme Online Store Ltd.”).

How to check the fix

  • Run the meta tag checker and look at the search result preview.

How FixReports finds it

The SEO checker and the meta tag checker count the characters of each title and flag those over 60 characters as an opportunity, not a failure.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a perfect title length?

No. Google sets no limit; a title of about 50 to 60 characters usually shows in full on desktop. What matters most is that the start describes the page.
