WCAG 4.1.2 · Level A

ARIA hidden element must not be focusable or contain focusable elements

Focusable elements are hidden from screen readers but can still be reached with the keyboard.

What this rule checks

Ensure aria-hidden elements are not focusable nor contain focusable elements.

Why it matters

Keyboard users land on elements that screen readers don't announce (WCAG 4.1.2).

How to fix it

  1. Remove aria-hidden from containers that hold focusable elements, or add tabindex="-1" and the inert attribute to hidden off-canvas menus and slides.

How to check the fix

  • Tab through the page with a screen reader running.

How FixReports finds it

Our scan runs the axe-core rule aria-hidden-focus in a real Chrome browser on every page it tests, and reports each failing element with its page, its markup and, where it applies, a screenshot.

An automated test confirms that this specific problem is present. It can't tell whether the rest of the page is accessible: some barriers only show up when a person checks the page.
