WCAG 2.1.1 · Level A

Scrollable region must have keyboard access

A scrolling area can't be reached with the keyboard, so keyboard users can't scroll it.

What this rule checks

Ensure elements that have scrollable content are accessible by keyboard in Safari.

Why it matters

WCAG 2.1.1 requires everything to work with a keyboard.

How to fix it

  1. Make the scrolling container focusable with tabindex="0" and give it a name, or make sure it contains a focusable element.

How to check the fix

  • Tab to the area and scroll it with the arrow keys.

How FixReports finds it

Our scan runs the axe-core rule scrollable-region-focusable in a real Chrome browser on every page it tests, and reports each failing element with its page, its markup and, where it applies, a screenshot.

An automated test confirms that this specific problem is present. It can't tell whether the rest of the page is accessible: some barriers only show up when a person checks the page.
